2003-2004 Student Activities Highlights

Last fiscal year's numerous activities sponsored by the De La Salle University Student Branch were rewarded by obtaining the highest Presidential Award of Excellence (PAOE) points for Level 1 Category which was given during the 6th CRC in Bangkok, Thailand. Such activities included leadership trainings, socio-civic events, technical talks and plant visits. This year, FY 2003-2004, the student branch sponsored about forty activities which included member participation in both local and international ASHRAE organized conferences. Capping all these activities was the ASHRAE Student Night attended by about forty students coming from five universities in Metro Manila. Highlights of these activities are as follows:

  • Participation in 6th CRC in Thailand - The immediate past president Hans Felix Bosshard of the DLSU-Manila Student Branch joined the group of officers and members of the Philippine Chapter in the 6th CRC in Bangkok, Thailand. He had an opportunity to observe business meetings and to meet other conference delegates and ASHRAE student members of Chulalongkorn University.

  • Paper Presentation in Conferences - Student members who had undertaken their indoor air quality studies presented in both local and international conferences such as the Asia Pacific Conference on Built Environment in Hong Kong and the Better Air Quality Conference in Manila. The ASHRAE funded undergraduate senior project "Building an IAQ Laboratory" was completed.

  • Student Internships - Ten students were accepted as trainees in different HVAC&R companies such as Chee Puck Refrigeration and Koldwinds Systems, Inc. Practical knowledge were gained by the students like design, installation, testing and servicing of HVAC and refrigeration systems. The students soft skills necessary for engineering practice such as communication and ability to work in a team were also enhanced during the on-the-job training.

  • Attendance in Technical Lectures, Seminars and Exhibitions - To become updated with new technologies and to acquire new knowledge in HVAC&R, student members either attended or sponsored lectures, seminars and exhibitions. Among these are the PSVARE Convention and Exposition, Air Contaminants Measurement Seminar, Carrier Seminar on Advances in Air-conditioning Technology, and Food and Beverage Exposition.

  • ASHRAE Student Night - The student chapter members of the Chapter together with invited student representatives of other schools participated in the First ASHRAE Student Night held at the Orchid Garden Stuites. Inspirational talks, raffle draws, refrigeration and air-conditioning quiz, games and songs formed part of the program. The students did not only learn more about ASHRAE and the benefits of a student member, they also had fun as they joined the games, interacted with each other and posed for picture taking. The Student Night was jointly planned by the De La Salle University-Manila and the Mapua student branches.

With the combined strength of DLSU, MAPUA and PUP student branches this year, ASHRAE Philippine Chapter student activities will definitely triple and become more varied.
